The difference this year is the payout will be modified - call it the Herb effect:
Winner gets 50%, second gets 30%, third gets 20%. Additionally, 4,5,6 will get their $5 back. (The 1-2-3 payouts will obviously be after the $15 for 4-5-6 is taken out). Previously the payout was 75%, 15%, 10%.
Last year we had 75 entries and Toby Kinney was the winner by tying with Herb Canada for most points while predicting two of the final four teams (FLA and UCLA). When there were only 20 entries, the 75/15/10 payout made sense. With 75 entries it's time to change it up a bit.
Goal is still to pick the most teams correctly. Points are awarded on a slightly graduated system: 5 points for the first round, 6 points for the second round, 7 points for the third round, up to 10 points for correctly picking the winner. Picking the final winner is basically worth picking an extra team in the first round. What this system does is give a few more players a chance for money at the end. We've used this system for the past few years and it always seems to reward those who do better at the end. If you have questions regarding it, please email me.
First tie breaker is picking the overall winner.
Second tie breaker is number of Final Four teams.
Third tie breaker is total points of the championship game.
Fourth is a coin flip.
Im heading out on vacation on Selection Sunday but should be checking into my hotel in time to send out the update - if I can deal with the supposed dial-up connection. I will send out the little program that generates the picks after the seedings are announced, along with instruction on how to use it. My friend Toby will also have the program available for download on his web site, and for those of you who still insist on the old school paper entries, I'll work something out this week.

If you know now that you are going to participate, you can send your money in early. All picks must be in by Thursday before the games begin. Since I'll be on vacation I'll extend the money received by date to the following Thursday.
